As part of the Global Platform for the Right to the City (GPR2C)’s action plan for this year, the working groups are preparing 4 thematic campaigns related to the Right to the City:
– Gender
– Advocacy at the High-Level Policy Forum
– Youth
– Artistic practices in the public space
The overall objective of these campaigns is to promote the active participation of members in the GPR2C, to mobilize, to raise awareness and to make the Right to the City known to the general public.
In general, each campaign will be carried out over a period of 3 months by the communication group together with another working group of the GPR2C. These campaigns consist of the mobilization of social networks, with a specific campaign during this period and the publication of a quarterly newsletter. In addition, to strengthen the working groups and take advantage of the experience of our members, each campaign will have an assistant from one of the organizations of the GPR2C.
In this newsletter, we share the results and materials of the gender campaign. This campaign had three objectives:
1) to make visible the Women’s Right of to the City and the organizations working on this issue, by mobilizing social networks;
2) to activate the gender group of the GPR2C, with the coordination of Ana Falú and the assistance of Tama Savaget, from the GPR2C support team.
3) International Women’s Day Campaign
As always and especially in this month of March, the GPR2C joined all the Women and Feminist organizations and social movements around the world in the struggle for the defense, promotion and realization of their Human Rights.
On March 7 members and allies of the GPR2C joined the social network campaign with the launch of a Manifesto. This document collects the 11 central points to make Women’s Right to the City a reality. To this end, cities must be free from discrimination and violence against women and must guarantee their political participation, gender balance and the realization of Human Rights in all human settlements.
On March 8, the GPR2C joined the women’s strike and remained silent on social networks.
The manifesto has been a great collective work in which 28 organisations and networks from all over the world have participated. In addition, it was collaborated in its dissemination on the UN-Habitat website and social networks.
The GPR2C’s gender group has presented it at the sixty-third session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW63) (11-22 March, United Nations Headquarters in New York) and will be included in the resolution that the Gender Inclusion Advisory Group will present at the twenty-seventh session of the Governing Council of UN-Habitat (8-12 April, United Nations Headquarters in Nairobi).
In this issue we present a selection of articles, videos and essential documents on child care, feminist urbanism, institutional practices and interventions with a gender perspective, urban security and women’s rights in the city, among others, with a focus on Barcelona, Bogotá, Buenos Aires, Guatemala City, Córdoba, Lima, Mendoza, San Salvador, Santa Fe, Santiago de Chile, Tierra del Fuego and some cities in Ghana, India, South Africa, and Thailand.
We thank our members and allies for their contributions, in particular: ActionAid, WIEGO, Red Mujer y Hábitat, Madre tierra, Collectiu Punt 6, Habitar Argentina and others as well as thanking Laura Leonelli, from the Centro de Intercambio y Servicios para el Cono Sur Argentina (CISCSA) for her special collaboration.
Stay tuned for the next advocacy campaign on the occasion of the High Level Political Forum that we will share in the coming weeks.
Thank you,
Isabel Pascual,
